What to Include

Competition-Winning Pieces

Work that has earned external recognition — like a CWA Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award — is portfolio gold. It demonstrates that your writing has been evaluated by a credible, independent process and found to be excellent.

Range of Forms

Include samples across genres and forms when possible:

• An essay that demonstrates analytical thinking
• A short story that shows narrative craft
• A poem that reveals linguistic creativity
• A personal essay that conveys authentic voice

Evidence of Growth

• Show variety — don't include five poems and nothing else (unless you're specifically applying to a poetry program)
• Keep it tight — 3-5 pieces is usually sufficient. Quality over quantity.
